The situation
You have a process, a material, or a machine that does something genuinely new. What you don’t have is certainty about where it beats the incumbents — and your runway won’t survive chasing the wrong market first.
I’ve sat on your side of this table. I ran manufacturing for an MIT spin-out with genuinely novel materials science — and the cost models told us what no one wanted to hear: the process couldn’t reach a cost any market would pay. Knowing when the answer is no, before the capital is gone, is half of what this assessment is for.
The work
A structured answer to three questions:
Where does the technology actually win? The ideal application profile — the geometry, volume, material, and value conditions where your advantage is real, and the ones where it isn’t. This comes from part-level analysis, not market-report abstractions.
Which markets contain those applications? Sized, ranked, with named target accounts — not “aerospace is a $900B industry,” but which programs at which companies buy parts your process should own.
What would it take to serve them? Certification path, capital, capability gaps, and a realistic timeline — priced from someone who has built qualified production four times, not from a brochure.
The deliverable
A prioritized market map, a defensible business case, and a recommendation you can take to your board or your investors. If the honest answer is that the opportunity isn’t there yet, you’ll get that answer — it’s cheaper now than after the Series B.
After the assessment
Most engagements end here. When the findings justify it, I stay on: introductions to the named accounts, the first technical meetings, and coaching your team until there’s a qualified opportunity in the pipeline.
